Dear Clients,

As we approach Yom Kippur, a day of reflection, atonement, and fasting, I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts and tips to help you through this meaningful day.

A Story of Forgiveness and Friendship

Once upon a time, two friends were walking through the desert.

During their journey, a fierce argument broke out between them, and one friend slapped the other across the face.

The friend who received the slap said nothing and did not retaliate.

Instead, he picked up a stick and wrote in the sand: “Today, my best friend slapped me.”

The two of them fell silent and continued their journey.

After several days, they reached an oasis and decided to bathe in the crystal-clear waters. One friend splashed around joyfully, while the other, the one who had been slapped, found himself swept into deeper waters and began to struggle and drown.

His friend quickly swam to him and managed to pull him back to the shore.

Once he had recovered, the friend picked up a large stone and carved into it:

“Today, my best friend saved my life.”

The friend who had slapped him and then rescued him looked at him in amazement and asked, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now you are carving into stone.

Why the difference?”

The other friend looked at him and replied, “When a friend hurts me, I write it in the sand so that the winds of forgiveness can erase the pain and bitterness from my heart.

But when something good happens in my life, I carve it into stone to keep the memory deep within me – a place where no wind can ever erase or diminish it.”

Reflections on Forgiveness

This story offers us a chance to discuss forgiveness, both with our children at home and with ourselves:

• It prompts us to think about holding grudges versus the ability to forgive and let go.

• It highlights the anger and bitterness we feel when we cling to resentments, compared to the relief and freedom that comes from forgiving a friend.

• It reminds us that we always have a choice – whether to forgive or to remain entrenched in anger.

• It acknowledges that we all make mistakes sometimes and that it’s important to ask for forgiveness from those we have hurt.

Understanding Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. It is a time for introspection, prayer, and seeking forgiveness.

The fast lasts for approximately 25 hours, starting at sunset and ending at nightfall the following day.

Tips for a Smooth Fast

1. Hydrate Well Before the Fast: In the days leading up to Yom Kippur, ensure you are drinking plenty of water. Staying well-hydrated can make a significant difference in how you feel during the fast.

2. Eat a Balanced Pre-Fast Meal: On the eve of Yom Kippur, focus on a meal that includes carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. This will help sustain your energy levels during the fast.

3. Avoid Heavy Foods: Try to steer clear of overly salty or spicy foods before the fast, as they may increase thirst during the day.

4. Take It Easy: On Yom Kippur, listen to your body. If you feel weak or unwell, take a moment to rest. The day is about reflection, not exhaustion.

5. Stay Spiritually Engaged: Participate in prayer services and engage in personal reflection. Keeping your mind focused can help distract from hunger.

A Sweet Treat for After the Fast

As you break your fast, I have a delightful recipe to share with you: a simple and delicious Orange Cake.

This cake is moist and bursting with citrus flavor, perfect for enjoying with family and friends.

Orange Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

• 2 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 ½ cups sugar

• 1 cup fresh orange juice

• Zest of 2 oranges

• ½ cup vegetable oil

• 3 large eggs

• 2 teaspoons baking powder

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• A pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease and flour a 9x13 inch baking pan.

2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

3. In another bowl, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, vegetable oil, and eggs.

4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the vanilla extract.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

7. Allow to cool before serving.

May you have a meaningful Yom Kippur, filled with reflection and renewal.

Wishing you an easy fast and a joyful celebration afterward.

Warm regards,
